Abstract: Introduction. Designer drugs are relatively new and their use has increased significantly in the last decade. In this context, the study of the risk profile of designer drug users becomes important for developing efficient prevention strategies.
Aim. The present study comparatively evaluates the risk profile of designer drug users in Romania versus that of classical drug users.
Materials and methods. A total of 68 participants diagnosed with mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use were recruited using a convenient non-probabilistic sampling procedure. The average age of participants was 25.96 years, with a standard deviation (SD) of 8.50. Fifty participants (73.53%) were using designer drugs at the time of inclusion. Demographic features, risk-taking behaviours and comorbid psychiatric conditions were recorded.
Results. Designer drugs users tend to be younger than patients who use other types of substances, but other demographic features do not seem to differ between the two groups. Furthermore, risk-taking behaviour patterns, frequency of dependence and withdrawal, and that of comorbid psychiatric conditions are not significantly different in the two groups either.
Conclusions. Designer drug use is associated with a risk profile similar to the one of other psychoactive substances.
Keywords: designer drugs, psychoactive substances, demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, risk profile, Romania.
