Traumatic injuries of abdominal organs – forensic assessment of life threatening potential (II)

C. Turculet, V. Gheorghiu, M. Marinescu

Abstract: Traumatic injuries of abdominal organs – forensic assessment of life threatening potential. One of the most difficult challenges in forensic pathology practice today is considered to be the assessment of life-threatening medical conditions, due to the major legal implications resulting from this assessment and also to the absence of universal criteria, applicable for all medical situations. Even though we are fully aware of the fact that it is not possible to introduce medicine into mathematical formulas, we attempted to outline some guidelines of assessment, based mainly upon the natural history of the abdominal trauma lesions, in other words trying to establish whether or not a certain traumatic injury will result in the death of the patient, if untreated.
Keywords: abdominal trauma, life-threatening conditions, severity scale
