Abstract:
Suicidal behavior represents a serious social issue. Currently, it is one of the most severe phenomena faced by countries in the European region. Suicide behavior patterns in Europe can sometimes be surprising and unexpected. In some European Union countries, suicide and suicidal behavior are decreasing; in other areas, dramatic increases can be observed, most often among young people. It is imperative that people have access to protection, support, and treatment aimed at addressing underlying conditions, as well as a broader awareness campaign on the issue of suicide.
Currently, suicide is recognized as a serious health problem because, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is one of the three leading causes of death for the population aged 15 to 44. Statistics or estimates provided by the World Health Organization are relevant in this regard, highlighting that suicide is a global issue affecting humanity, manifesting in all countries of the world with great intensity, amplified by the conditions of the current crisis.
There are numerous explanations that can be attributed to suicide, which have psychological, sociological, educational, and socioeconomic characteristics. In line with this interpretation of suicide as a social issue, sociologists believe that suicide rates can only be explained by social factors, independent of the biological traits, characteristics, and psychological tendencies of the individual.
While the suicidal act itself may involve individual characteristics and motivations, suicide rates are inevitably subject to social trends and pressures, being – as the renowned sociologist É. Durkheim emphasized – a consequence of social facts that manifest and operate in a particular society. These social facts are, in fact, a product of social relationships and forms of human association, consisting of “ways of working, thinking, and feeling, external to the individual, and endowed with a power of constraint by which they impose themselves.”
In order to have a comprehensive understanding of the suicide phenomenon in the European Union, it is imperative to define what constitutes suicide and then determine its specific characteristics.
Keywords: suicide, suicidal behavior, European Union.
