Abstract:
When targeting the skin, the action of the flames produced during the fires is manifested by burns of different depths and extents. Due to the destructive changes that occur, it is essential to establish the vital characters of the lesions and distinguish them from the postmortem consequences of the action of the flames. Corroboration of toxicological results with macroscopic and histopathological examination to determine whether the victim was alive at the time of the fire is the first step in determining the true cause of death. The purpose of this paper is to correlate the macroscopic diagnoses of the lesions with the histopathological ones in the cases of death that occurred following the outbreak of fires from the period 2014-2021 from the case files of the Legal Medicine Institute Cluj-Napoca.
Keywords: fire, burns, carbonization, carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), soot.
